Catherine the Great may have achieved power in a bloodless coup, and she extended the borders of Russia to such an extent that its leaders to this day can't stop thinking of the old place as an empire; but she also sponsored literary achievement, her personal art collection formed the nucleus of what's now the Hermitage Museum, and she was responsible for the first state-run higher education institute for women in the whole of Europe. This exhibition of material from her collections reflects the amazing range and depth of her interests.
