Corstorphine Dovecot In the western area of Edinburgh stands a large, circular ‘beehive’ dovecot, complete with nesting boxes, in a good state of preservation. The building is likely to have stood alongside a now long-gone castle built in the 14th century, and nested thousands of doves, which were considered an important food source at the time.

Chesters Hill Fort, Haddington An Iron Age fortified village dating back approximately 2000 years, Chesters Hill Fort is about three miles north of Haddington. Defensive measures in the shape of ramparts can still clearly be seen, protecting what would have been a fairly extensive village of roundhouses.

Castle Law Hill Fort, Penicuik This Iron Age fort is located halfway between Edinburgh and Penicuik. Building is thought to have started some time around 500BC, with stronger fortifications developed up until the arrival of the Romans in 80AD. It includes a completely subterranean chamber, 20m long, that has been reinforced with a concrete roof and windows.

The annual pagan fire festival Beltane takes place here and it is a popular location for watching fireworks displays held at Edinburgh Castle.

Cramond Island, Cramond Accessible only at low tide, Cramond Island is half a kilometre into the Forth estuary. Its history is plainly visible in the shape of the pillared submarine boom wall and several fortified gun emplacements – relics from WWII. It is also thought to have been used in medieval and Roman times.

Cairnpapple Hill Located in the Bathgate Hills, Cairnpapple Hill is an area of great historical significance. Burial grounds and remains from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages have been unearthed here. There is a visitor centre and reconstructed cairn to allow visitors to examine the grave sites as they would have been in prehistoric times.

Craigmillar Castle One of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland, Craigmillar Castle was begun in the late 14th century but not completed until the 16th. The central tower is the oldest section, dating from 1425; the rest of the grounds include a doocot, two gardens, and inner and outer courtyard and a church.

Crichton Castle, Pathhead Located two miles from both Gorebridge and Pathhead, Crichton Castle was built as a tower house in the late 14th century. Its notable features include an Italianate courtyard façade and vaulted basement. It was more recently used as a filming location for Rob Roy, starring Liam Neeson.

Cammo Lodge Visitor Centre The Cammo Estate in north-west Edinburgh holds several ruins, including Cammo House, a 17th-century mansion that burned down after 1975. Other remains include the ruined stable block, ponds, a bridge and the lodge that now houses a small visitor centre. Cammo Water Tower, complete with battlemented parapet, still stands.
